Which is better: a 529 or a taxable investment account?

What if your kids don't end up using all (or any) of their 529 account that you have worked so hard to save for them?  What it have been better for you to have saved in a taxable brokerage account instead?  The answer is:  it depends.  It depends on your state income tax rate, your capital gains rate, your federal income tax rate and how much of their account they use. Budgeting is not a dirty word!  It simply knowing where your money is coming from and where it is going every month.  Just knowing makes it a lot more likely that you make better decisions with it.  Here is an interactive tool to make it easier.  I left all of the cells unlocked so you can modify them according to your personal needs. Customizing it might require a few Excel skills, but you can do it!!

Net Worth Calculator

Keeping track of your net worth on a regular basis is a great way to be sure that your plan stays on track and can be motivating to help you continuing saving and investing.  Here is an interactive calculator that will help you figure out your current net worth and then project the growth for 10 years in the future.  You will need to be able to modify your assets and liabilities according to your situation, so I left all of the cells modifiable.  Be careful not to change the formulas in the projection section.  You may need a few excel skills to make it work correctly for you but give it a go!
